As women of the 21st century, we feel it is our right to have the option of wearing pants during band performances. It wasn't until the 1960's second wave of feminism rolled around that it was even socially acceptable for women to wear pants. Are we regressing to the social inequality seen in the 1960's? Stand up to those who say that "pants are unprofessional," this is a double-standard created by men. If they are allowed to wear pants, then why should we not be afforded the same? Powerful, influential women such Hillary Clinton and Carly Fiorina are seen just as professional as their male counterparts when they wear pants. Not only is this a moral issue, but an issue of practicality. Pants offer mobility, allowing band students to move around and situate themselves comfortably with their instruments. If we cannot play comfortably, we therefore cannot play musically. Is the cost of looking "professional," worth quality of our sound? Wouldn't it be even more "uniform" if both girls and boys were wearing more similar ensembles? Finally, we urge you to stand firm in this fight for equality.
