We all know that women have periods, we know that there is nothing they can do about it, in that case, many of us ask, why are sanitary items taxed? Governments around the world tax women on their periods. In Britain they are are taxed at 5%. This adds 11p to an average pack of 16 Lil-Lets tampons. This may seem very little, but over the average 40 years a woman menstruates for this builds up. A woman working on the minimum wage would have to work for 38, full 24 hour days to pay for her lifetime supply of sanitary items. But the money is a small part of this problem, the fact that "advanced and equal " societies believe it is right to tax women on their biological needs is just outrageous. The fact that a government, primarily built of men, feel that they have a right to make us pay for our periods is outrageous! The fact that the European Commission for Taxation think they have a right to tell our governments that they cannot lower this tax below 5% is equally outrageous! I want a world where periods are not directly stigmatised by governments, where women and girls are not ashamed to speak out on their periods.
