Hello Warren Township Parents-

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Heather Silver and I have 2 boys at ALT. It had come to my attention, and now to all of yours, that the Board of Education has decided again to overstep in decision making in regards to treats for birthdays in the classroom. I had sent out a letter to all parents I knew urging them to respond to the Board with their dissatisfaction about their decision. The immediate response was the Board sending a letter via the school Principals no less, to all of us phrased in a way that is both underhanded and sneaky. They have made it seem as though the decision to eliminate snacks has already been passed as to, I can only assume, avoid anyone voicing their opinion and challenging this proposed amendment. In fact, by sending it the day before a long holiday weekend only proves my point further in their hopes it would get lost in everyone’s email during the weekend. That wasn’t the case for me. They have also mislead most people into thinking that the time for anyone to challenge this would be on December 21 when the next meeting is actually December 7 where we are entitled as taxpayers, parents of the school system and community members to address it. I plan to do just that and have informed them of that.

To that end, as I suggested in my original correspondence, I urge you all to come out to that meeting and let your voice be heard. As I said, whether you agree with my feelings about this topic or not, you must agree that these are the types of decisions that should not be slipped through during the night with no consideration for the feelings of the community they serve. Especially mid school year, leading to many children with birthdays yet to come to feel neglected when they watched some friends celebrate their birthdays already. This is a change that at best, should take effect at the start of a school year. The mission of school boards in smaller towns like ours I thought was to work WITH the community and parents to make the schools the best place for everyone. So many fun and enjoyable things continue to be taken from them (when was the last field trip I’ve been fighting years to see?), leaving them overworked, stressed and tired at a young age when they should see school as fun also. There should be some enjoyment there.

In lieu of ‘knocking door to door’ due to the time restraint to make next Monday’s deadline, I am creating this petition that I am hoping you will sign, simply showing your support for it to be a topic discussed jointly with the parents, schools and Board of Education. I am not asking you to agree with my stance on the topic, simply that it should not have been made in such haste and without our input. PLEASE-I ask you to pass this along to your friends at both ALT as well as the other schools. I have touched on people in every school I believe but clearly there’s no way for me to reach everyone so have at it and get our voices heard!

I thank you in advance for your help and hope with all my heart you will find the time next Monday, December 7th at 7pm to attend the meeting at the Board of Education office on Mount Horeb Road. The more of us that show our support, the better chance we have of being heard. And if they believe that no one cares by not showing up, I only fear to think what else will come down the pipeline over time. If you have any additional questions, I’m happy to chat at your convenience.

Heather Silver
