Traffic in the Bay Area is terrible and getting worse.

Based on Caltrans data, congestion on the area's roads has increased 47% since 2012.

In a 2014 survey by the Bay Area Council, 71 percent of respondents said they thought traffic congestion had reached the crisis stage.

In San Jose alone there were 59 traffic fatalities in 2015, 35 percent more than the year before and the most in more than 20 years.

Ramp meters, carpool lanes and other measures have been unable to offset the increased volume created by people moving to the area because of job opportunities. Additional highways or rail lines would take years and cost billions of dollars to build.

Therefore...

We, the undersigned, support a program under which people (whose jobs permit) would VOLUNTARILY agree to WORK FROM HOME ONE DAY A WEEK. An online registration system would be devised to help divide up the days of participation evenly. The goal would be to take 10 to 15 percent of commuter vehicles off the road every weekday.

Expected Benefits:

Faster commutes (a la what's presently seen during weeks of major holidays), more time every day for work, play, family, etc.

Less pollution, better air quality

Fewer accidents, lower car insurance rates

Fuel savings, reduced transportation expenses

Postponement or cancelation of enormously expensive transportation infrastructure projects
