Our goal is to be allowed to make a presentation during Freshman Orientation at Georgia Tech (FASET) about the importance of food waste management and show how students can get involved with food reallocation. We plan to expand the volunteer organization known as Campus Kitchen in order to make a larger impact. Leftover food from Georgia Tech dining halls is usually thrown out, amounting to tons of waste that could be reallocated, creating a positive economic and social impact, as well as minimize waste.

Many people may think throwing food away is not harmful because it can decompose; however, decomposing food emits the greenhouse gases methane and carbon dioxide. Moreover, methane from food waste is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Georgia Tech can do more to prevent so much food rotting in a landfill and set an example for other universities and institutes.

Homelessness and hunger across the world is a real and pressing issue. According to the statistics provided by Action Ministries, not only is Georgia the 2nd worst state in the nation for homelessness, but Atlanta is the poorest city in the US for children. While there are 250,000 college students in Atlanta, there are about 7,000 homeless Atlantans every night. With the whole student body working together, college students can make a difference to decrease hunger. Being in the midst of one of the largest cities in the United States with one of the highest rates of homelessness in the country, Georgia Tech not only has the opportunity to make a larger impact but also a great responsibility.

Help us spread awareness and make an even bigger impact for the homeless in Atlanta!
